A round up of 2021

As we hurtle towards the end of the year, we wanted to take a look at some of our highlights for 2021. Like many small businesses, we have had a somewhat tumultuous 2021. The Covid-19 pandemic and its subsequent lockdowns have meant that we have had to adapt how we work. We have been working from home, working in the office, socially distancing our site visits, sanitising every five minutes – it’s been quite the rigmarole, but we do what we must.

It’s not been all doom and gloom though; we have been busy working on a number of basement projects throughout the year as well as some exciting AutoCave projects for the coming year!

If you would like to speak to a member of our team about your basement options or about extending your home above ground, give us a call on 01628 826066 or email us.

Supplier Spotlights

We spent some of our blogging time this year looking at some of the partners we have been working with. As the leading basement design experts in the country, we can only really recommend the best in the business so when our friends at Packaged Pump Systems (PPS) brought out a new pump, we had to feature it!

When you are doing any subterranean work, managing water flow is one of the most complicated challenges you face. We took a look at the formidable AlertMaxx2 pump system back in February.

We also featured our damp proofing partners Delta Membranes; these guys lead the way in innovative waterproofing solutions for all kinds of construction. Earlier this year, and in response to the Grenfell Tower tragedy, they launched a new fire retardant system, which offers the same brilliant flexibility as its predecessors but with improved fire retardation.

New Projects

We have picked up some really exciting and varied projects this year working with our friends at Knowles Construction. Completing on a project in St John’s Wood, having had planning permission granted two years ago was definitely a highlight. This property was part of a whole-house refurbishment and our part in it was to design a 250m2 basement complete with a rear courtyard and spiral staircase to the garden.

We have also been involved in the design, planning, and construction of a huge project in Medmenham in Buckinghamshire. The basement itself was below the front garden and linked the main house to a new detached annex.

We have also been working with our partners Autocave, designing and completing a fantastic 6 car Autocave in Surrey – pictured below.

Home Improvements

The pandemic lockdowns have seen a huge surge in people looking to improve their homes. In the last 24 months, many of us have spent more time in our homes than ever before and now, with the ‘new normal’ changing the way we work in the long term, we’re seeing even more people take the plunge and modify their homes. We took a look at some of the most popular home improvements.

We also took a look at some of the most commonly asked questions architects ask about basements. Now, this might sound a little odd and have you asking “shouldn’t architects already know all about basements?”; if we’re being harsh – yes, they should; but what you have to remember is that the basement industry is a very complex niche and one that has only really become popular in cities in the last 20 years – so the industry is catching up. If you’re thinking of doing some basement work, it’s probably best to come straight to the basement experts.

So, as we sign off 2021 and look forward to 2022, we’d like to wish all of our families, friends, colleagues, readers and followers a very happy holiday period and here’s to a healthy and prosperous New year.
