Finished Project: Medmenham

We are the leading basement experts in the South East and London which means that when it comes to designing innovative basement projects, we’re the first port of call for many contractors and homeowners.

Last year we were tasked to design a stunning, unique basement as part of an exciting renovation project in Buckinghamshire. While we don’t often speak about our project to protect our clients’ privacy, we have been given permission to show this wonderful project in all its glory.

Location

As we had mentioned before, this project was undertaken in the beautiful village of Medmenham in Buckinghamshire – not far from famous rowing venues Marlow and Henley. This area is a very popular place to live, but with few properties coming to market it’s an exclusive residence.

The Scope of Work

Villages in the UK often have a very strong identity built around architecture. Their rich history often dictates what kinds of buildings populate the space and so, when looking to make alterations it is important that you stay sympathetic to the surrounding environment.

This main house on the plot is a listed building and as such, we had to be careful to preserve the history of the property, while considering the aesthetic of the wider village. Previous applications for this project made by other firms to link the main house to an enlarged annex above ground had been refused due to the listed status of the building.

There were a number of existing buildings on the plot and the client wanted to join the structures together by creating a basement under the garden area with staircases on either end, therefore increasing the usage potential of the annex.

The Design

We worked closely with the client to ensure that our design brief suited their requirements and our colleagues at Knowles Construction were able to complete this project on time and within budget.

We designed a joining basement from the main house to the annex. Due to height restrictions, we were unable to extend the annex upwards, however, linking it to the underground basement structure enabled us to demolish and rebuild it with an extra subterranean floor.

The basement had its own lobby and sitting room complete with lightwells allowing natural light to enter. From the outside, the lightwells are simply glass floor panels unobtrusively embedded in the lawn – as you can see from the drawings below.

The project was finished with a high-end interior design, ensuring that the luxurious finish in the new basement sitting room and bar area matched that of the rest of the property. The Annex was enlarged to accommodate an extra bedroom and fully equipped gymnasium. All of this while only minimally disturbing the external aesthetic.

Here are a few pictures of the project from before to after.
